description This dissertation examines how mainstreaming gender on climate change adaptation policies can contribute to addressing the vulnerability of women and men to climate change threats. Taking into account that vulnerability to climate change must be seen from a gender perspective, it looks at the case of Coquimbo Region in Chile. In order to do this, this dissertation explores the key components of vulnerability, which are exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity, and its relationship with gender needs, gender role and access to control and over resources. In this context, it critically examines how the national climate change adaptation policy addresses these vulnerabilities. Finally it concludes that at central level Chilean government has a commitment with gender equality; nevertheless, the adaptation policy reflects a weak incorporation of gender issues surrounding the vulnerability to climate change, which in the case of Coquimbo Region result in the implementation of gender-blind adaptation practices to face climate change threats.
