description The objective of this thesis was to evaluate the effect of group identification, perceived effectiveness of the use of violent tactics and group emotions of Chileans in the justification that they make of the use of violent tactics exercised by frontline demonstrators in social protest in Chile. When no explanatory models were found for this topic, a theoretical approach was made from social psychology, especially from the theoretical one of collective action based on the SIMCA and EMSICA models, which were used as references. Methodologically, the data were used in the first wave of the survey Legitimacy of Carabineros: violence, human rights and social control and contemplated a non-probabilistic sample by quotas of 2,505 cases. Multivariate techniques were used as analysis techniques: Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Analysis. The main finding is that identification with frontline protesters (group identification), perceived effectiveness of the use of violent tactics (perceived effectiveness), negative emotions towards Carabineros and positive emotions towards frontline demonstrators (group emotions) have an effect on justifying the use of violent tactics exercised by frontline demonstrators in the protest. Based on the data worked, the model that has a better explanatory fit for the sample analyzed is the one that states that identification with frontline demonstrators has a mediating effect on the justification of violent tactics in protest. In this case, the identification with demonstrators encapsulates elements (effects) of perceived effectiveness of the use of violence in protest and positive emotions towards frontline demonstrators, but, in addition, considers that there is a direct effect of these variables on the justification of Chileans of the use of violent tactics exercised by frontline demonstrators in protest in Chile.

The effects of group identification, perceived effectiveness of the use of violent tactics, and group emotions.
