Sumario:The main goal of this thesis was to evaluate the prophylactic capacity of L. fermentum UCO-979C against the colonization of the Mongolian gerbil stomach by H. pylori SS1. The probiotic strain was able to colonize the antral region of the stomach of the gerbils for periods over 6 days, as detected by PCR and bacterial culture mainly. This colonization happens in spite of the resident lactobacilli microbiota, and allows the neutralization of H. pylori SS1 colonization in a prophylactic assay. This prophylactic administration of the L. fermentum strain UCO-979C also inhibited the urease of H. pylori SS1 in vivo, together with its significant decrease both at the antrum and the body of the stomach at 6 days post-challenge. The results presented showed the prophylactic ability of the strain L. fermentum UCO-979C upon H. pylori.
