| Sumario: | This article studies the aesthetic, political and cultural aspects of the creation of the Jaime Guzmán memorial site of Santiago. Guzmán was an important ideologist of Pinochet’s military regime, assassinated in 1991 by left-wing extremists. The memorial is located at the heart of Sanhattan (a hybridization between Santiago and Manhattan). As an emblem of globalization’s contradictions, this urban landscape reflects the social utopia of a world in constant acceleration, populated by skyscrapers and governed by profit. Besides the analysis of the ideas evocated by the building and the location, this article explores the Jaime Guzmán memorial site from an ethnographic perspective that considers the uses and unexpected effects of the place. |
