Sumario:Natural and water resources are currently at a crucial juncture due to overexploitation and climate change that have increased the vulnerability of these areas that depend on mountain resources. Currently paradigms and ways of using ecosystem must be changed. In this context, this research raises guidelines to consider for public policies for a mountain area through the incorporation of environmental, hydrological and social criteria and taking the Claro river basin, Central Chile, as a model of study. In this research, it is proposed that a basin committee should be the organization that meets all the institutions and organizations that are involved in the water management. Moreover, it is proposed that by means of current laws and municipal tools mountain areas must be planned, all funded by the users through a payment system. The following management model aims to lay the foundations that can be replicated in other areas to implement similar projects and thus protect the water resources for current and future generations.
