Thus, the TFP can be regarded as the ancestral amniote condition. However, the constancy of this trait in mammals is still uncertain, as bilateral TGC projections have only been reported in rodent species. In addition to thalamic projections, avian TGCs establish conspicuous reciprocal connections with nuclei in the isthmic and pretectal regions: the nucleus ithsmi pars parvocelullaris (Ipc) and the nucleus pretectalis principalis (PT), respectively. In mammals this association with the isthmus and pretectum has yet to be elucidated. In this project we sought to clarify three aspects of the hodological organization of the TGC-originated tectofugal pathway in mammals: First, using the diurnal rodent Octodon degus as a model, we investigated the organization of the isthmo-tectal connectivity. Second, we searched for the presence of a homologous to the avian PT. Finally, in order to make a clearer picture of the evolutionary history of the mammalian TFP we introduced the marsupial Thylamis elegans as a new comparative model to study the organization of visual pathways in basal mammals.

En avez y mamíferos, la porción tecto-tálamica de esta vía exhibe un carácter bilateral y difuso y es originada exclusivamente por las células ganglionares tectales (TGC). Por tanto, la TFP puede ser considera como la condición amniota ancestral. Sin embargo, la constancia de este rasgo en mamíferos es aún incierta, en tanto que las proyecciones tectales bilaterales solo han sido reportadas en especies de roedores. Adicionalmente a las proyecciones tálamicas, las TCG avianas establecen conspicuas conexiones reciprocas con núcleos de la región del Istmo y el pretectum: el núcleo del istmo parvo celular (Ipc) y el núcleo pretectal principal (PT), respectivamente. En mamíferos esta asociación con el Istmo y el Pretectum aún debe ser establecida. En este proyecto buscamos clarificar estos tres aspectos de la organización hodológica de la vía tectofugal originada por las TGC en mamíferos: primero, utilizando al roedor diurno Octodon degus como modelo, investigaremos la organización de la conectividad Istmo-tectal. Segundo, buscaremos un núcleo homologo al PT de aves en el pretectum mamífero.
