| Sumario: | Privileging a comparatist and interdisciplinary perspective in the field of comparative literature, this article aims at analysing two autobiographical narratives produced in the 19th century by two former American slaves, Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass. Taking into consideration that literary studies cannot be dissociated from their historical context, this investigation uses the concept of "history from below" as proposed by historians Peter Burke and Jim Sharpe to approach questions of race, gender and class issued forth by Jacobs and Douglass in their narratives. |
