Sumario:This article aims to provide an overview of the practice of public administration in Brazil in recent years, pointing out their main characteristics and the relationship between state and society. The narrative begins with the first moments of the history of Brazil, which explains the main events that impacted the functioning of public administration until the end of the second term of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The presentations of this essay come from a glance at the current literature on the topic, as well as the testimonies of authors who have participated in the development of public administration as either discipline and as practice. It is intended that this test is a source of information and inspiration for all those involved in the study and practice of public administration. In this sense, this paper presents a reflection on the events and how the political ideology influenced public management, with touches on the impact of patrimonialism, bureaucracy and managerialism in shaping the activities of management today.
