Description
Summary:The process of scanning and making rare works available is of paramount importance to guarantee access to information and preserve the cultural memory of a society. This article aims to explore the process of digitizing rare works, their rarity criteria and their relevance for the preservation and dissemination of knowledge. The methodology used was bibliographical research, searching for articles related to the topic on Google Scholar and exploring the relevant laws on the website of the Chamber of Deputies. The results revealed the importance of rare works in the preservation of cultural memory, as well as the need for digitization to make these works available and access them virtually. The rarity criteria are defined by each institution, but generally involve antiquity, uniqueness and limited editions. Copyright laws are also considered when digitizing these works. The digital preservation of rare works allows remote access, ease of consultation and preservation of the content, but constant monitoring of the systems is necessary to guarantee the maintenance and preservation of the servers. The preservation of rare works is essential to transmit cultural, social and political memory to future generations. Lastly, challenges such as copyright need to be balanced to allow for the digitization of these works. Digital culture plays an important role in spreading knowledge and information connecting people around the world. In conclusion, the digitization of rare works is essential to preserve and democratize access to these cultural treasures, strengthening a nation's cultural identity and enriching intellectual knowledge.
