| Sumario: | The different phases of the estrous cycle, as well as infectious and inflammatory processes, interfere with insulin concentration in dogs. The low action of insulin predisposes dogs to develop diabetes mellitus. The pyometra is one of the most common pathological conditions of the female reproductive tract and diabetes mellitus of the most common endocrine diseases in small animal clinic. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of the estrous cycle and pyometra in the rates of insulin sensitivity. The bitches were divided into five groups (pro-estrus, estrus, diestrus, piometra open and pyometra closed) and held on serum insulin and comparing the means. The results demonstrated significant differences between the proestrus and diestrus stages when compared to bitches with pyometra. The development of diabetes mellitus appears to be multifactorial and it is necessary to do further studies to clarify this immune-endocrine interaction. |
