Resumo:This article presents some of the historiographical discussions that have taken place over the last fifty years in studies on slavery in the classical Mediterranean world. It analyses some of the recent elaborations by Fabio Duarte Joly and José Moura Knust in their critique of the idea of a "slave society" as opposed to that of a "society with slaves" established by Moses Finley, as well as some of the later treatments of the concept by other scholars. It also presents some considerations on the idea of "slave systems", particularly with regard to the analysis of the role of commercial circulation in relation to the processes of enslavement. It develops some clarifications regarding the comparison between slavery in the ancient Mediterranean world and in the modern Atlantic world, with special emphasis on the treatment of colonial American slave societies.
