Description
Summary:In 2023, the 50th anniversary of Metropolitan Regions (MRs)  was celebrated in Brazil. In view of the increase in the urban population in the state of Maranhão in the last 30 years, the aim of this Paper is to analyze the institutionality and effectiveness of these  three  MRs. To this end, a bibliographical review was carried out based on the following procedures: a bibliographical and documentary survey; selection, analysis and interpretation of the data and information obtained. The results reveal a mismatch between the institutional framework and the implementation of the three MRs, especially when compared with data from Regic 2008 and 2018, combined with obstacles to interfederative governance. The conclusion is that there is a possibility of reversing these mismatches through effective interfederative governance.
