Resumo:In this work, we aim to investigate the relationship between referencing and polemical argumentation in an opinion article about the decriminalization of drugs in Brazil. To this end, we are theoretically affiliated with Textual Linguistics and, more specifically, with the dialogue that has been established between it and the Theory of Argumentation in Discourse, by Amossy (2020). We approach this dialogue based mainly on Macedo (2018) and Cavalcante et al. (2020), which demonstrate how argumentation reveals itself textually. We also consider the postulates of Amossy (2017) regarding the modality polemic in argumentation that appears in the opinion article analyzed, as well as the regulations of this genre, based on the study by Rodrigues (2001). Referencing, the textualization strategy we analyzed, is supported by studies such as those by Mondada and Dubois (2003) and Custódio Filho (2011). The analysis revealed that the construction of conflicting points of view that characterize the modality polemic goes directly through the way in which the referents are (re)elaborated in the opinion article analyzed. It was demonstrated, therefore, that referencing is an important argumentative strategy and, more broadly, that the dialogue between Textual Linguistics and the Theory of Argumentation in Discourse is quite fruitful.
