| Sumario: | This article analyzes the Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) of digital newspaper archives in Portuguese and their implications for historical research. The study examines the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira (HDB), the Biblioteca Nacional Digital de Portugal (BND-PT), and the Hemeroteca Digital de Lisboa (HDL), aiming to understand how their features influence access, navigation, and exploration of digitized historical sources. To this end, we apply the impresso Method, developed by Ehrmann, Bunout, and Düring (2019), evaluating six key criteria: source criticism, content search, content filtering, generosity, user management, and connectivity. The results indicate progress in metadata, navigation, and visualization but reveal significant gaps in semantic enrichment, integration with external repositories, and support for advanced computational methodologies. We argue that these limitations constrain the potential of digital newspaper archives and reinforce the use of analog practices over digital resources, thereby limiting innovative approaches. The article advocates for a qualitative leap toward “Digital Newspaper Archives 2.0,” fostering greater connectivity, personalization, and transparency in technical decisions, and consolidating these platforms as essential tools for contemporary historical research. |
