| Sumario: | The study of external representations systems used to build language within the framework of a disciplinary fi eld presents the opportunity to study school activities from a semiotic perspective. Thus, we centered our attention on the analysis of pictorial representations (PR) which constitute an important element for the construction of the scientifi c discourse, which is “opaque” to students when they read a text with the purpose of learning something from it. Three types of pictorial representations extensively used in the scientifi c language were characterized: cartesian graphs, tables and structure diagrams. |
