Sumario:Hyperemesis gravidarum is the occurrence of uncontrollable vomiting during pregnancy, resulting in dehydration, weight loss and ketosis, this is mainly due to hormonal and emotional changes that take place during pregnancy. However, hyperemesis can also occur due to cytokines circulating in the maternal blood, vitamin B6 deficiency, allergic or gastrointestinal reaction. In this study, a literature review of the narrative type was adopted as a methodological strategy, due to the possibility of accessing research by other authors on the topic addressed, allowing the gathering of these experiences and reports, based on the researcher's understanding. Some studies have evaluated ginger as an effective and safe treatment for nausea and vomiting in the context of pregnancy. Here, we provide an update and analysis of the use of ginger in preventing nausea and vomiting in emesis gravidarum. It would be interesting to conduct preclinical studies to understand the effectiveness of the main constituents of ginger, including gingerols and shogaols. For greater safety purposes, the risk and benefit of use should be assessed and attention to possible drug interactions.
