Resumo:The article analyzes the Pedro Claver canonization process which shows his work of evangelizing African people in Cartagena de Indias during the XVIIth Century. The main objective is to question the saint's utility in the identity formation in the port. The article proposes the saint tries to make the Christian religion one of the aspects of that identity; secondly, he helped to generate alliances between European factions that were looking toward the economic and political control of the port. Nevertheless, he failure in his intention to eradicate the African heritance, which continue in Cartagena's cultural diversity.
