Sumario:By considering the dictionary as a work that brings countless information about the language and culture of a people, in this article the objective is to present it as a fundamental didactic-pedagogical instrument in the process of initial reading instruction and literacy in the first and second years of elementary school. For this, the objectives and principles of Pedagogical Lexicography are discussed, which takes dictionaries as its object and this theme as the focus of discussion. In addition, there is a reflection on initial reading instruction and literacy, rescuing the dictionary as a fundamental element in this process. Finally, some suggestions of activities are presented as capable of assisting in the process of initial reading instruction and literacy, thus highlighting the potential of the dictionary as a linguistic and cultural resource.
