| Resumo: | The main objective of this study is to analyze phonological adaptation processes in proper names of foreign origin and new creations in Brazilian Portuguese. In this sense, the first name of students enrolled in public schools in São Carlos, SP, were collected and analyzed, in order to investigate the relationship between language changes and phonological identity, based on the limits related to what is and what is not considered Portuguese, from the point of view of the pronunciation (sound), to native speakers. The students designated by the names listed were asked to answer a questionnaire containing general information about their names and nicknames. Subsequently, recordings of the pronunciation of a few names were made with two informants (employees) from two schools of this city. Data were phonetically and phonologically transcribed as well as analyzed based on non-linear phonological models. This study aimed to understand, through the presence of anthroponyms from English origin in Brazil, how the linguistic system of AE (American English) and BP (Brazilian Portuguese) relate and influence each other, since the same anthroponym may present, at the same time, phonetic, phonological and orthographic traces from both languages. The strength of the phonological system of the target language in the incorporation process of outsider words to this system was investigated. Thereby, it was found that the speakers are often aware of the functioning of their mother language and operate with and on it at opportune moments to escape from what would be expected in that context, thus simultaneously denying and affirming issues of their linguistic and cultural identity |
