Resumo:The new method of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) to calculate the capacity and the level of service of two-lane highways will likely be based on Follower Density (FD). In Brazil, few studies have determined the impact of climbing lanes on two-lane highways, especially involving FD, which is the objecBve of this paper. To achieve this goal, a set of traffic data was obtained from highway segments to calibrate and validate the traffic flow simulator VISSIM. With a recalibrated version of the simulator, traffic data were generated for hypotheBcal highway segments with and without climbing lanes, with which flow-FD relaBonships were adjusted. The results of this analysis indicated that the models proposed in this work produced the level of service and FD values more adherent to the values observed in the field.
