| Sumario: | The repeated nuclear tests conducted by North Korea in Northeast Asia have had a profound impact, leading to significant transformations in the perceptions and security policies of countries situated in this strategically important region. Among the nations affected, Japan stands out as a compelling case of defense policy evolution during the early 21st century. Against the backdrop of mounting tensions, this article aims to examine Japan's policies towards North Korea, specifically exploring whether the country has adopted a stance of deterrence by denial. To achieve this, the article delves into various aspects, including: (i) the dynamics of Japan-North Korea relations, (ii) Japan's perceptions of the regional nuclear capabilities and security dynamics, based on the analysis of White Papers and Diplomatic Bluebooks, and (iii) the evolution of defense policies under the leadership of Shinzo Abe (2012-2020).
