Resumo:EGb 761 is an extract of Ginkgo biloba (Tebonin, Byk Chemistry), a standardized mixture of active substances derived from green leaves of the Ginkgo biloba L. tree. Beneficial effects of EGb 761 were described in the treatment of cerebral insufficiency, cognitive deficits and peripheral vascular disease. While the mechanisms responsible for these effects are not well understood, experimental studies show that the EGb 761 can scavenge free radicals, including nitric oxide. The objective of this study was to verify the chemical composition and the antioxidant activity of commercial formulations with Ginkgo biloba. The antioxidant effect of Ginkgo biloba was evaluated using the free radical DPPH. The presence of total flavonoids was measured and those peaks in the chromatographic fingerprint which corresponded to flavonoids were identified but not quantified. A correlation between the flavonoid content and antioxidant activity was established. Only one among seven samples studied herein was in accordance with ANVISA regulations.
