Descripción
Sumario:This paper analyses the grammaticalization process of the nominal collective suffix -pi in Toba of Eastern Formosa (Argentina). This nominal suffix becomes a second significant of a discontinuous verbal pronominal morpheme, i.e. it allows the encoding of a split between ‘group’ and ‘restricted group’ within first and third person plural bound pronominal morphemes. Hence, first and third person verbal pronominal indexes are described and compared with their corresponding free pronouns. We demonstrate that the collective morpheme is going through a grammaticalization process, particularly in what regards a change of paradigmatic status.
