| Sumario: | This paper analyzes the role of Rio de Janeiro in the “atlantization” process of the São Paulo economy, especially after the arrival of the Portuguese court in the former capital of its American colony in 1808. Although this process had been unfolding since the last quarter of the 18th century, here we focus our analysis “in the times of Independence”, as we understand that there was an acceleration of this process precisely in this period. Thus, in the midst of the process of integration of the captaincy of São Paulo to the maritime circuits of the mercantile system of the Portuguese Empire, we seek to relate the consolidation of the sugarcane plantation for export in the São Paulo plateau, to the formation of a subsystem of land-sea trade that put in communication the producing areas, located in the interior of the captaincy, to Santos and Rio de Janeiro, main ports for the flow of São Paulo products destined to the external market. |
