| Sumario: | The defining traits of comics were described by several authors through the latest decades, who focused on identifying its mechanisms and unique graphic symbols, such as its use of images that are both sequential (Eisner) and juxtaposed (McCloud), and the use of bubbles to express dialogue (Cagnin). However, there’s a contemporary movement that proposes the subversion of the hegemonic editorial language, which is enabled through indie publishing and some small publishers. The indie publishing scene is also flourishing with political and critical content, since it is not considered appealing to bigger publishers. This study investigates the affinity between the experimental aesthetics and the political intent of selected comics, comparing their mechanisms and signs with traditional comics signs, described by the literature. Our corpus includes the following works: “Topografias” (Brazil, 2016), “Desconstruindo Una” (UK, 2016), “PQ CA?” (Brazil, 2017) and “My Favorite Thing is Monsters” (USA, 2017), which were chosen by their visual experimentation, and by their diverse social and geopolitical contexts.
