Sumario:The present study demonstrated and presented how the physiotherapy worked in the early mobilization within an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and thus identified which were the complications caused by immobilism. The objective was to show the advantages offered by physical therapy within the ICU, how it acted and the techniques that were used during the care. Questions about the importance of physical therapy in the ICU, the performance in early mobilization, which treatment for hospitalized patients and which causes of functional impairment were answered. For the accomplishment of this article, a qualitative approach was made through a bibliographical revision in electronic databases, from August 2017 to October 2018, with the inclusion criterion of books, articles of revision and original and experimental studies in the Portuguese language performed in patients in the ICU between1998 to 2018. The work of the physiotherapist inserted within a multidisciplinary team is of fundamental importance, since its function is not only to guarantee the survival, but to offer the quality of life.
