| Sumario: | This article aims to understand issues concerning gravediggers and to identify the existing social traits regarding the job as well as how it is seen by professionals and how they identify themselves with it. It was decided to develop a qualitative research, in which 08 gravediggers from 03 cemeteries in Belo Horizonte (02 public and 01 Jewish) were interviewed. For the analysis, categories of linguistics discourse analysis were used and it was possible to identify two semantic paths concerning the job of gravedigger. The first one concerns the discourse that portrays the stigma that permeates the profession and the prejudice and discrimination that gravediggers face in society. The second one is related to the construction process of the identity of the gravediggers and the way they deal with death after they started doing a job that is directly linked to it. We conclude this work, therefore, with reflections on the present stigmas regarding the profession of gravedigger and suggestions for future research. |
