| Sumario: | In 1923, Livraria Stock released, as part of the small-format collection Les Contemporains, a series of Propos sur l'Esthétique written between 1921-1923, along with excerpts from Libres Propos (Journal d'Alain). Alain's monumental System of Fine Arts, comprised of essays written during the war, had been published in 1920 by the Nouvelle Revue Française. In deliberate opposition to the System, and consequently serving as an introduction to it, this concise collection of 35 Propos, gathered seemingly at random, possessed the striking virtue of unveiling to a diverse readership a profound and novel Presence. The translation was executed by colleagues in collaboration with the Translation Group of the Philosophy Department at the University of Brasília. The initiative aims to systematically translate hitherto unpublished philosophical works into the Portuguese language, subsequently offering them in open-access periodicals. |
