Sumario:This text addresses the relevance of food produced for self-consumption by farmers and regularly transferred to family members residing outside the rural property for food security and nutrition (FSN). The data stem from quantitative research conducted in 112 municipalities in western Santa Catarina, obtained through a questionnaire administered to 381 farming families. Analytically, the concept of multilocalized families, still not widely spread in Brazil, is adopted. The text begins with a brief characterization of the region and the interviewed farming families, discusses production for self-consumption and its relationship with FSN, and presents and analyzes data on self-consumption production and the monetary values per food group that farmers estimate transferring to relatives living in the cities of the researched region. It concludes that self-consumption production plays an important role socioeconomically and that the transfer of such foods from rural establishments to relatives residing and working in the cities of the region significantly contributes to their food security and nutrition.
