| Sumario: | Based on Durand's point of view about the iconoclasm promoted by the conjunction between monotheism and philosophy in the West (which paradoxically produces the proliferation of images in contemporary times), this article dialogues with Horkheimer's Instrumental Reason notion to propose its equivalent Instrumental Imaginary, characterized by reducing imaginative’s power of images. The concept is demonstrated from Afro-Brazilian religions in contrast with the carnival and advertising images. The theoretical support is given by Gilbert Durand, Max Horkheimer, Muniz Sodré and Lilia Moritz Schwarcz. |
