Sumario:This article will analyze the question of the amateur within the context of North-American avant-garde cinema, and the way in which the theoretical work of directors Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren and Jonas Mekas has contributed for the elaboration of a poetics of this term. The analysis of this theme will be grounded on the following texts: Amateur Versus Professional (Deren, 1959), In Defense of Amateur (Brakhage, 1971), and The Changing Language of Cinema (Mekas, 1962). Our study will focus on the following aspects: socioeconomic, artistic, and technical. The article defends the position that these texts have a historical and theoretical importance on the term and contribute to understand its poetics.
