| Sumario: | Objective: Evaluate if the Trazodone, an antidepressant, which modulates serotonin at central neuronal ways, is effective in controlling tinnitus. Method: Prospective, double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled study, performed at the Otolaryngology ambulatory of the Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Department of the Federal University of São Paulo – Escola Paulista de Medicina – UNIFESP – EPM, with tinnitus patients. 85 patients were analyzed between February and June of 2005. 43 have received trazodone and 42 placebo, for the period of 60 days. The clinical criteria of analysis were intensity, discomfort and effects in life quality caused by tinnitus, by an analogical scale, with degrees between 0 to 10, given by the patients before and after the use of the drug or placebo. We compared the relation between audiometric profile, sex, age equal or over 60 years and intensity level before treatment and the responses after treatment. Statistical analysis was performed. Results: the studied groups were homogeneous in the evaluated criteria. There was in both groups significant decrease of intensity, discomfort and life quality caused by tinnitus before treatment, nevertheless no significant difference was observed in drug and placebo groups. There was an indication that the drug was associated with higher discomfort. No relation between audiometric profile and sex with the clinical criteria was observed after the treatment and there was no significant difference in drug and placebo groups. When the intensity levels of tinnitus before treatment were analyzed, no correlation was observed with higher or lower after treatment. Patients with age equal or over 60 years had obtained improvement in the criteria analyzed after treatment. Conclusion: The trazodone had no efficient effects in controlling tinnitus in the patients evaluated with the doses utilized. |
