Sumario: The test results have to be accurate, and the interpretations of these findings      must be correct, given the medical and social significance of a positive      anti-HIV antibody testing. This study aimed at evaluating the performance      of 19 laboratories participating in the IAL – External Quality Assessment      Program for HIV serological assays (EQA HIV). The external evaluation was      carried out to help the participant laboratories in monitoring the accuracy of      their results, thereby offering better quality to the services provided to the      population. Four rounds of the Program were performed in 2014. And for      this purpose, the serum panels (test items) were characterized for the anti-      HIV antibody reactivity status by using different immunodiagnostic testing      approaches. The panels of these characterized samples were distributed to      the participating laboratories. The analysis on the test items was performed      by anti-HIV serological assays used in the respective participant laboratory      routine. Of 17 laboratories participating in the screening assays assessment      program, 16 presented 100% satisfatory performance and one got 96.7%,      as it presented an inadequate test item result. In the confirmatory trials, the      annual satisfatory assessment of the participants was 100%, except for two      that obtained 75% due to non-compliance with the rules established by the      Program. The IAL – EQA Program for HIV evidenced the implementation      of the activities developed in the laboratories, based on the competence of      human resources, and certified the use of high quality diagnostic reagents,      which are crucial to produce reliable laboratory results.
