SOURCE OF DATA: Original and review articles in Medline/PubMed and Lilacs databases, using the key words: health professionals, x-ray/x-rays, chest; pediatric intensive care unit. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS: Pediatric radiology had its beginning concomitantly to general radiology, just after x-rays discovering. The main point came in the 1990s with the need of experts in the area. X-ray is the most used exam in Pediatrics. It is possible to help and determine diagnoses, to locate tubes, catheters and probes, to analyze thoracic condition pre and post medical procedures and to evaluate clinical evolution by x-rays. Children admitted to intensive care units are subjected to numerous chest x-rays, considerably increasing their exposure dose. For most clinical indications, a simple frontal image of the chest is enough. Knowledge of the chest radiological technique has proven important in reducing radiation dose, image artifacts and misdiagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Chest x-ray is recognized as a very important tool in the evaluation and management of the daily routine of the pediatric intensive care unit. It is used to evaluate functioning of equipment that is used to ventilate, moisturize and monitor a child who receives intensive care. For most clinical indications, a simple frontal image of the chest is enough.

FONTE DE DADOS: Artigos científicos originais e de revisão das bases de dados Medline/PubMed e Lilacs, utilizando os termos: profissionais da saúde, raio-x/raios-x, tórax, unidade de tratamento intensivo pediátrico. SÍNTESE DOS DADOS: A radiologia pediátrica teve seu início concomitantemente à radiologia geral, logo após a descoberta dos raios-x. O destaque veio nos anos 1990, com a necessidade de especialistas na área. A radiografia do tórax é o exame mais utilizado em pediatria. Por meio dele, é possível auxiliar e determinar diagnósticos, precisar a localização de tubos, cateteres e sondas, analisar a condição torácica pré e pós-procedimentos médicos e avaliar a evolução clínica. Crianças internadas em unidades de tratamento intensivo são submetidas a inúmeros raios-x de tórax, elevando consideravelmente sua dose de exposição. Para a maioria das indicações clínicas, uma simples imagem frontal do tórax é suficiente. O conhecimento da técnica radiológica do tórax tem se mostrado importante na redução da dose de radiação, dos artefatos de imagem e dos diagnósticos equivocados. CONCLUSÕES: O raio-x de tórax é reconhecido como um instrumento de fundamental importância na avaliação e no manejo da rotina diária da unidade de tratamento intensivo pediátrico. É indicado para avaliar o funcionamento de equipamentos que são utilizados para ventilar, hidratar e monitorar uma criança que recebe cuidados intensivos.
