Sumario:In 1953, Italo Calvino participates in a voting process within the Cottolengo in Turin serving as the scrutineer at polling stations and collector of votes in the wards. Th e book Th e Watcher and its character Amerigo Ormea came from this “fi eld experience”. Th rough the story I will be doing an “ethnographic exercise” approaching the literature by Italo Calvino with the “anthropology of the city” developed by Michel Agier. Th e analysis brings clashes of ideals of the Italian Communist Party member who, when faced with the complexity of life that appears in the daily Cottolengo is in crisis with the general and abstract concepts advocated by the party.
