Descripción
Sumario:This paper analyzes the scientific controversy regarding the use of synthetic phosphoethanolamine in the treatment of cancer, which gained prominence in 2015 and 2016. Through a quantitative content analysis, we examined 231 texts published in the newspapers Folha de S.Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo about the so-called “cancer pill”. We found that, despite the coverage being concentrated in the health sections, the approach to the topic was not limited to scientific aspects. There was an emphasis on the political-juridical and ethical-moral focus, explaining that science has consequences that go beyond the academic sphere. Various sources and voices were consulted, which reflected in different positions and social actors.
