| Sumario: | The article explores the life and survival stories of German immigrants, known as Danube Swabians (Donauschwaben), who originated from former Yugoslavian, Romanian, and Hungarian territories. These individuals fled or were forcibly expelled at the conclusion of World War II. Many ended up in refugee camps in Austria before eventually resettling in Brazil, particularly in the municipality of Guarapuava in the early 1950s. Drawing primarily from the autobiographical manuscript of one immigrant survivor and an interview with one of her grandchildren born in Brazil, the study analyzes the life paths recounted across two generations of the same family. It aims to uncover how the family's past experiences have influenced younger generations. The article applies theoretical frameworks proposed by Aleida and Jan Assmann, as well as Harald Welzer, particularly focusing on "communicative memory". This approach considers the construction of meanings through these narratives regarding a traumatic historical past and the emergence of new interpretations thereof. |
