| Sumario: | This case study aims to describe the traditional management of the Cerrado (brazilian Savanna) with fire proposed by the indigenous communities of western portion of Mato Grosso state, as part of the strategies used to prevent forest fires. From 2007 to 2010 a program to prevent and combat forest fires on the indigenous lands Irantxe, Myky, Paresi, Tirecatinga and Utiariti was implemented by the Institute of Environment - IBAMA and the National Indian Foundation - FUNAI. During the preparation of Operational Plans, the traditional management of the savanna was rescued, through the survey of traditional knowledge about the direct and indirect effects of fire on flora and fauna. The result was a proposal towards the management of open vegetation types, with plots sizes varying from 1,500 to 30,000 hectares, from February to June and with an interval of three years. The implementation of this burning regime will provide important information about the ecology of fire in the Cerrado, specially its effects on zoochorous plants and medium and large animals. |
