| Summary: | Introduction: The shoulder region is one of the most affected and in the aging process there may be changes in the pain threshold and functionality. The objective of this study was to compare and measure the pressure pain threshold and functionality of shoulder region between young and elderly people. Methodology: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out in which individuals should not report pain or discomfort in the shoulder and present negative results in clinical tests. Volunteers responded to the SPADI (Shoulder Pain and Disability Index) questionnaire to assess functionality. To evaluate the pressure tolerance threshold, algometry was performed using the WAGNER FORCE DIAL analog algometer at points in the shoulder region. Data analysis occurred using the SigmaStat 3.5 package and comparisons between groups were made using the unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney test with a significance level of 5%. Results: Elderly people have greater functional limitations in the shoulder when compared to young people, although there was no significant difference. Young people scored 8.21±11.07 on the SPADI questionnaire and elderly people scored 22.34±23.97 points. Regarding the pressure pain tolerance threshold, young people had higher thresholds than the elderly, however, of the 12 points, 7 were statistically higher. Conclusion: In healthy individuals, there was no significant difference in shoulder functionality between young and elderly people. Regarding the pressure pain tolerance threshold, young people have the highest threshold. |
