Sumario:OBJECTIVES: To compare the functional performance and respiratory muscle strength of elderly people according to their quality of life classification in the SF-36 questionnaire. METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study with 140 elderly of both genders. The Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), the sit and stand up test in 30 seconds (SeL) and the Hand Grip Strength (FPP) were used for the evaluation. Respiratory muscle strength was also evaluated through maximal respiratory pressures. Quality of life was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. For data analysis, descriptive statistics were used with values expressed as percentages, medians and interquartile deviations. To compare the groups, the Mann Whitney test was used in the SPSS program (version 20) with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: Most elderly people were identified with good performance in functional tests and respiratory muscle strength, except in the 30sec SeL test. In the assessment of quality of life, 106 elderly people (75.7%) in CoF and 100 elderly people (71.4%) in CoM were classified as “Good performance”. Comparison between groups according to performance in quality of life showed that all tests used showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in CoF. In the CoM, only TUG and FPP showed a significant difference (p<0.05), so that the best results are for the elderly with better quality of life. CONCLUSION: Functional performance and respiratory muscle strength are better in the group with good performance in the physical component. In the mental component, only TUG and FPP performed significantly better.
