Sumario:The world today is predominantly urban, in which man increasingly uses of manufactured products, electronics, and packaging in general, generating waste from various species, which can take up hundreds of years to decompose in nature. Excess consumption without concern for the proper disposal of garbage, and the impacts it caused, among other factors, has hindered the construction of sustainable cities, thus contributing to the worsening of the global environmental crisis. However, our time is beginning to be drawn as a period known as the era of sustainability, where the utilitarian view of nature seems to give way to rational use of natural resources through the adoption of more ecologically sound practices, promoting urban sustainability. In this context, Brazil emerges in the National Policy on Solid Waste (Law 12.305/2010) with its objectives, principles and instruments, enabling governments new guidelines for environmentally sound management in relation to the allocation and disposal of solid waste. The present study aims to analyze the challenges faced in the pursuit of sustainability, especially regarding handling and disposal of urban waste, highlighting how this process is being undertaken in the city of Cuiabá, while identifying problems and possible paths that lead us to the realization of a more sustainable city model, in fact, for present and future generations.
