Resumo:The present paper aims to analyze misspelling related to the spelling of the variable diphthongs in Brazilian Portuguese “ai”, “ei” and “ou” in texts produced by children in literacy phase, in which are found cases involving the insertion of a semivowel (caichoeira, goustou), or even the deletion of this structure (fejão, caxa). Previous papers related two possible tendencies for the emergence of mistakes involving this class of diphthong, such as: the influence of speaking and of the schooling itself. Even though these misspellings are considered to be incorrect on the grammar terms, such evidence indicates the construction of hypotheses by children who, several times, base themselves on what they have already learnt about the linguistic structure of their language.
