Sumario:This article discusses two concepts related to the educational sciences: identity and the role of teachers. It begins by reflecting on the ontological foundations of teachers' professional performance, and the role of identity construction in this process. Next, the guidelines for the role of teachers in the school environment are presented, involving variables and nuances that range from their formative years to their professional choices. Both the identity and the role of the teacher are directly influenced by issues such as the historical context, educational regulations and public policies, the cultural specificities of education in certain analytical sections and also the variations in conceptions and application of teaching and learning methodologies, as they occur in the stages and modalities in the Brazilian case. The main aim of this article, therefore, is to relate these two concepts, identity and the role of the teacher, in order to propose a reflection that integrates them and contributes to the totality and complexity of the theme present in this discussion.
