Descrição
Resumo:The play O Santo Inquérito [ free translation: The Holy Inquisition] by Dias Gomes deals with the issues that involve both the fictional time of the plot, located in the Colonial Brazil”, and the time of enunciation, a moment of political effervescence due to the presence of the military in power. These two temporalities are revealing of the process of persecution that individuals, especially those made inferior, went through. Through allegory, the playwright reaches invisibility before the censors and weaves a tragedy of resistance to totalitarianism. The purpose of this article is to analyze how the Inquisition themes are established in Gomes’s text and to reflect on the practice of heresy during the colonial period.
