Sumario: Over time, the bodies of the dead, whether humans or animals, had various forms of destination. The burial of bodies in cemeteries has been the practice most used throughout history, and remains currently the standard. However, it was found that in antiquity, this practice was responsible for injuries to the health of the population residing near the burial sites. Besides the health risks, there have been reports of cases of pollution due to the decomposition process of the corpses. In the mid-eighteenth century, Brazil adopted legislation prohibiting burial in churches and urban areas. There are two resolutions imposed by the National Council of Environment addressing the process of building the cemeteries, once the decomposed body expels the necrochorume. The percolated liquid of a corpse is composed of water, minerals and organic substances. The pathogenic substances present in this compound are responsible for contamination of soil and groundwater. With the action of rain and surface water, necrochorume infiltrates soil horizons, reaching groundwater and aquifers. The structure, materials and soil used in cemeteries are factors that can directly or indirectly affect the possibility of contamination. Aiming at the occurrence of contamination cases and risks to public health, there should be maintenance criteria and methods of building cemeteries. Still aiming at the environmental quality, there is the prevalence in the adoption of necrochorume treatment methods. Â
