Descripción
Sumario:The archaeology of Carthage is an important source of information to the study of the history of the ancient African city. The material traces discovered in the last decades in Carthage and other semitic sites of the Western Mediterranean permit the reconstruction of the economic, social, cultural and politic development of the city, since its foundation until the destruction, in 146 bC. By the perspective of social representations and processes of ethnic identity fixation we examined, from archaeological data and some historical references, the Carthaginian hegemony over other Western Mediterranean semitic communities and the production of otherness by Greeks and mainly Romans concerning the Carthaginians. Finally, two hypothesis, not exclusives, are put forward regarding the destruction of Carthage by the Romans.
