Sumario:Inflammatory bowel diseases are disorders with idiopathic aetiology which histopathologic diagnosis is given by immunohistochemical markers. The objective of the present study is to review the most recent published clinical reviews, using immunochemistry to analyse useful markers on the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of these diseases. A bibliographic review was done of articles published between 2014 and 2017, available on the databases PubMed/ MEDLINE and Cochrane library, using the research terms “inflammatory bowel disease” AND “immunohistochemistry”. The results showed that MMP-9 and faecal calprotectin are useful markers for the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel diseases. Furthermore, the quantification of TNF, IL-6 and Anti-TNF also showed up to be useful on the follow up of these patients; specifically to analyse worsening and improvement of the clinical condition after starting the pharmacological therapy. In conclusion, immunochemistry is a very promising methodology to analyse the IBD and, more research that intends to discover other markers and that contribute to the care of these patients should be encouraged.
