| Summary: | The research’s intention is to analyze avant-garde traits in the work of the design entity comprised by the Maison Martin Margiela, under the scope of consecrated critical works, especially the foundations of the categorical framework presented by Peter Bürger in his book Theory of the avant-garde. The corpus intended for such analysis encompasses particular pieces designed by the Maison Margiela, between 1988 and 2014, available online in the form of photographic images, whose access corresponds to the documental part of the research. Besides Bürger, the analysis will also call upon, secondarily, concepts by Walter Benjamin, Clement Greenberg and Theodor Adorno, other notable thinkers concerned with art in the modern and contemporary conditions. The intention of this study is to contribute to the occupation of the intellectual gap generated by the absence of academic discussions that assume fashion as a full-fledged art form, on equal footing with other disciplines, within those art theories as well as to the critical revision of said well-established theories |
