Descripción
Sumario:Subcenters are part of the urban structure of the capitalist city since the 20th century, and have been analyzed and conceptualized by researchers from different fields of knowledge. In Geography, the investigations have identified universal elements that have theoretically and methodologically grounded a great number of other research studies. Since the 1970s, the transformations in the structure and intra-urban centrality have implied, however, new roles and functions to the sub-centers that differentiate them from the first conceptualizations, requiring comparisons and counterpoints to the consolidated literature. As a contribution to this debate, we conducted a literature review with a survey of the first empirical analyses, conceptualizations and more recent case studies within the scope of Brazilian Geography. From this, we highlight new characteristics and different types of sub-centers, which demands reflection about its permanence and transformation in the contemporary city.
