| Sumario: | This research aims to study the educational experience of the Juan Bautista Alberdi Institute (1956 – 1974) in the context of the Alfredo Stroessner’s dictatorship that ruled Paraguay from 1954 to 1989. In the educational area, the dictatorship received orientations from international agencies that, based on US development policies, targeted the educational system as economical factor. Within a highly controlled and oppressive society, the educators who participated in Juan Bautista Alberdi Institute experience exercised a type of education that didn’t followed the imperialist guidelines. In fact, they reflected about paraguayan society status quo searching critic knowledge that could free the student’s freedom of thought. With strong influence from guarani’s culture, the educators kept the cooperativism traces that made the Institute a front of resistance allied with Paulo Freire’s pedagogical methods. As a contribution to Paraguay historiography, this research was constructed using official documents and testimonials from people that directly participated in the experience, being the oral history the essential approach to rescue it. This work also presents other educational resistances that tried to prosecute critical thought, both in rural and urban areas |
